Only 46% of employee job references are checked before new employees are hired
Interview and Hiring Guide Update Released
Janco Associates has just updated its Interview and Hiring Guide. The Interview and Hiring Guide is part of Janco's continuing effort to create a set of standard 'Best Practice' processes and documentation that CIOs can use to better manage the technology function in their enterprises. In addition to the traditional MS WORD and PDF formats, an eReader book (ePub) version is included in the standard offering. The guide contains two electronic forms - Background Check Authorization Form and Interview Questionnaire Form.
Janco has found that personal references are not used to verify resume data.
The CEO of Janco, Victor Janulaitis said, "It is important for the success of an organization that it find and hire individuals who can succeed. Janco has identified a number of common reasons why new hires do not work out: job responsibilities nor clearly defined, different expectations for new hire and the enterprise; cultural miss-match, project lost sponsorship/funding, and others. The Interview and Hiring Guide addresses how many of these can be avoided."
The CEO added, "Checking references is still the most used process for verification of candidate-specific information, like education and job experience, with almost 1 of 2 (46%) using that as a standard practice." Janulaitis also said, "We discovered that employers now are starting to depend on social media to verify key information that candidates put on their resumes. Janco found in the review of 450 hires at 78 companies, the verification processes used by employers for information on candidates varied significantly. Before job offers are made employers checked references - 46%; depended on candidate's answers during the interview process - 30%; evaluated candidate's social media persona - 26%; contacted employers/schools listed on resumes 17%; asked follow-up questions of candidates after the primary interview - 6%; implemented probational hiring - 4%; reviewed samples of candidate's work 2%; and tested the candidate during the hiring process 2%." The numbers are greater than 100% as many employers had multiple responses.
Interview and Hiring Guide
Version 2.0 of the Interview and Hiring Guide contains specific questions that interviewers can ask about prior employment, the position the candidate is interviewing for, education and training, remote working, decision-making and creativity, management and leadership, non-work activities and interests, and questions that should be avoided. In addition, the guide provides a list of best practices for screening resumes, phone screening, interview best practices, and hiring best practices.
