Microsoft's Browser Market Share Erodes Over 9.5%

may be the preferred player in the browser market for most of the people who
use Internet. But the company is losing ground, albeit on a small scale, to
other aggressive players in the field.
Janco and the IT Productivity Center recently released their Browser and
Operating System Market Share White Paper (News
-
Alert), which shows that Microsoft’s market share
has been eroded by 9.5%. This is due to the increase of market share by
browsers like Firefox and applications like Google (News
- Alert)
Desktop, according to the report.
M. Victor Janulaitis, CEO of Janco Associates, Inc. and the ITPC, said in a
press release that “The positive glow on Firefox was dulled in with the
identification of some security gaps. But the real story is the erosion of
Microsoft’s market share.”
Since September 1997, Janco has been collecting consistent data on browser
activity. The company focuses on various commercial sites that do
business-to-business activity. The company expects to issue an update to its
market share data at the end of the fourth quarter of this year.
According to the study, the Firefox browser saw an increase of 5.6% in users
during the last twelve months. Google Desktop made some handsome progress
too.
But the company says the Netscape 8.0 version browser is dead. According to
the study, the top five browser market share rankings are: 1.) Microsoft’s
IE – 63.86%; 2.) Firefox – 17.40%; 3.) Netscape – 10.21%; 4.) Google
Desktop– 2.38%; 5.) Mozilla – 1.40%.
The company also proclaims that Microsoft’s new Operating System, Vista, now
has 5.69% of the market of business and enterprise users who browse the
Internet.
